LT   |32.97.110.xxx |2008-12-31 18:46:15
They failed on the grammar. The correct term is "evert", meaning 'to

Coffeecoaster   |208.117.20.xxx |2009-01-01 09:30:23
No, fuckwad, I'm afraid you're mistaken.
Invert; To turn (something) upside
down or inside out. You're right about that. However;
Eversion means a
process which turns something inside out/ The words are vaguely synonymous, but
eversion has more mathematical connotations. And the grammar of 'eversion' is
fine, as it is the noun form rather than the verb, 'evert'.
Anonymous   |66.41.151.xxx |2010-06-14 00:33:24
Also, sea cucumbers can "evert", a process in which they barf out
they're organs, which are acidic, ward off predators. Now I bet you REALLY want
to play this game.

I think that the gems are just a random challenge. However many you collect, you
still get killed by a hideous Lovecraftian monster, which is kind of the point.
YF3   |68.42.227.xxx |2009-01-02 01:58:12
At the beginning of level 7, where it has gems/total number of gems, Evert
there.
Mecha Sonic   |75.85.215.xxx |2009-01-03 08:25:50
Yeah, Evert at the beginning of world 7, where it shows your "240/240"
Gem counter he left there. Once you have all gems, you can Evert there to go to
the final "side". Finish the level in this state to get world 8, which
is really hard. I had to glitch thorugh a wall to beat it, as it has a tricky
puzzle.

There's an eighth level. After collecting all gems, restart level 7 and there'll
be a new eversion point at the beginning. After beating the 'new' level 7,
you'll go to the next level.

Well, the hand itself is lethal, yes. The arm holding it? not so much.
Coffeecoaster   |208.117.20.xxx |2009-01-02 07:08:03
There are a several hands in that level that can gave me trouble. The one
closest to the the breakable brick you jump down near comes up through a bridge.
Just get close enough that it comes up, then walk through the black part. The
next has no bridge, so inch out to the v-e-r-y edge of the land and let it come
up, then jump through the black bit of the arm again.

For the next one, inch
out to the edge again and let ti come up, then jump out slightly to the the
right and quickly hit left to get onto the level directly above you. Now get
all the way to the left so that the hand goes back down, and repeat the jump
again to get to the third level. You can skip the next one. Just jump on
enemies to get onto top of the level and just hop over the top of the screen and
past the whole next hand.

found an everse point?
Schwa   |71.79.238.xxx |2009-01-02 07:12:09
There's an eversion point near the start of the level (~1/4 of the way to the
end?) underneath a platform covered in thorny plants. There's a monster running
back and forth underneath it and other blocks you can use to jump over it.
Mecha Sonic   |75.85.215.xxx |2009-01-03 08:27:38
Yeah, your gonna have to Evert a lot to get every gem here. I Everted 20 times(I
kept getting stuck)before I finished.
Anonymous   |70.68.130.xxx |2008-12-31 21:43:47
I also can't get past the level 4 hand. Every time I try to jump over the pit,
the hand gets me. It won't come out until I jump, and I can't get past it
without jumping for lack of a bridge. The Evert button does not work at that
point either.
Yea..   |84.105.136.xxx |2009-01-01 12:18:55
You've gotta stand right in front of it, so the hand will appear, but just in
front of you

Then walk thru the arm, the red stuff only hurts, not the black
part
failtard   |97.126.136.xxx |2010-11-04 12:50:54
Dude, the hands coming out of the pit are the easy part, it's the ones at the
beginning and right at the very end that are supposed to give you a hard time.
PS the only eversion point in the level is right before the very end, have fun
mate.
Kidou   |24.119.172.xxx |2008-12-31 21:59:55

such from THIS game.
It gets worse   |97.126.136.xxx |2010-11-04 12:52:59
The creepy ending you're referring to is the "bad" one, there's an even
creepier ending, have fun beating world 8 eh.
Raphael   |209.161.211.xxx |2009-01-02 14:35:55
I thought it was cute. :3

But yes, it was definitely creepy too. But it leaves
space for interpretation. Perhaps the influence of these nightmare-ish worlds
gradually transformed the main character into a monster as well. When you look
back and play World 1 again, you don't think of the game the same way. It
reflects on your impressions of the environment becoming slowly chaotic.

I wish
it was a little longer, though, and less frustrating at parts.
Ben Hurr   |74.216.102.xxx |2010-05-09 17:12:21
Or, the nightmarish world is the natural state of Eversion's world, hence the
point of collecting all the magical gem doohickeys. :B
Less?   |97.126.136.xxx |2010-11-04 12:54:51
Are you kidding mate? The frustration level of this game is probably one of the
lowest I've ever seen, it's sooo easy. What he needs to do is make it harder
and add more worlds (and possibly even more eversions).

Um, have you tried walking through it? XP
Kidou   |24.119.172.xxx |2008-12-31 22:17:07
@Raven

Inch closer to the hand and wait for it to go up, then go under
it. (Only the red part kills.)

And on the Clouds in level 2, find an Everse
point and jump on them like platforms. (The screen changes slightly when you
find an everse point.)
Stephane Pare   |24.200.194.xxx |2008-12-31 22:21:14
what's en everse point exactly? I don't understand, i've stood on every single
object i've managed to find on the first 2 levels and pressed everse, nothing
happens. flowers, purple boxes, every single square of ground, noting seems to
be it
Anonymous   |72.70.85.xxx |2009-01-01 21:34:32
Everse points are when the screen flashes a different color. Press x to change
elements of the game.

I've decided tot ry using it when standing on those purple
boxes, or maybe to pickup enemies, everse seems to
do absolutely nothing at all, wether i hit it once entering
a elvel, or try to do anything with it.  Yet i'm sure
that everse thing, whatever it is, is suppsoed to be the key
to walk on the damn clouds, and i'm getting frustrated with it.
Eagle0600   |203.214.37.xxx |2009-07-11 07:55:27
The eversion points are invisible until you stand in one. They're areas, not
objects.

When you stand in one, the background changes slightly, as does the
music.

The first one is in the first level between two flowers. Once you've
found that one, you should know what to look for.

Evert into the darkest view (it should read 5-6 on the top right corner), then
when you land on the crumbling blocks, hop off the ASAP and head back to the
beginning. Evert into the view where the smiley blocks can be used for gems, and
voila. BTW, you can just finish the whole level in 5-4 too. No crazy blood

to avoid the showers of blood. XP

How are you supposed to get past the trees in world 3? I feel so overly retarded
because of them. If you are gonna say to evert, they are solid in both worlds.

bulcon   |98.165.219.xxx |2009-01-01 00:21:16
that part pissed me off so much u have to evert to the original 7-1 and trees
will appear for u to jump and hit the blocks. then u have to get back to 7-6
with out dying and erase the blocks above them without dying. Wasting 2 hours
on that ruined the game for me
spriteless   |131.230.151.xxx |2009-01-13 02:59:44
You can do it in either order, actually. I found it easier to break the blocks
in 7-6 and backtrack to turn the world back to 7-1.
Really?   |97.126.136.xxx |2010-11-04 13:03:11

Ok, world 4, can;t hop out to the right, up, and back left as the hand is in the

do you do this?

na, i'm stuck here too. Anyone with some help here??
Munkie   |96.52.17.xxx |2009-01-01 23:55:00
NM. I figured it out. You gotta hug the wall so the hand goes away, and quickly
do a jump up and back into the wall again. i got over and as i was coming back
down the other side, I died. Just keep trying until you can do it.
Munkie   |96.52.17.xxx |2009-01-01 23:58:31
NO WAIT. do the first part to get up but DON'T kill the little blob men! Use
them to jump above the screen until you're standing on the center stack, then
jump and push right, you should fly right over the whole wall and come down on
the other side!

Found a glitch that'll save you if you're stuck in the labyrinth part of level
8. Stand on a spot where a bush should grow, and when the level everts to a
stage with a bush that would normally block your way, you'll seem to disappear.
You're actually walking on top of the stage, and you can keep walking right
until you fall through the gap in the ceiling back into the level. This will
probably work in other parts of the level too (I don't recommend this if you
like to play for realsies, i.e. no cheating)
Mecha Sonic   |75.85.215.xxx |2009-01-03 08:30:25

RoflCopter   |12.183.162.xxx |2009-01-07 01:54:16
That tall row of blocks? Smash through each block above you, then jump up. Keep
doing this until you can jump to the next platform. There is a gap in the
flooring on that platform. (If you cant get through it, you probably will die.)
Fall through the platform, goes backwards, and go down to the other level. The
rest of the level is rather simple.
I'm helping   |141.238.105.xxx |2009-01-28 21:47:55
You can also try the second bad guy on the ledge after the breakable blocks. If
you jump on his head and keep pushing to the right you'll make it over the wall
above him.
The Watcher   |71.111.189.xxx |2009-01-01 02:38:06
Maybe its because i'm very good with puzzles, but this game was tough and short.
I can't tell if thats the ending (Got all 240 gems) or if it isn't...if it is,
you're darn good at screwing with people... o.O
Raphael   |209.161.211.xxx |2009-01-02 14:39:51
In order to get the good ending, you must get all the gems in Level 7, go back
to that level, and evert at the very beginning. Then you will access an eight
eversion, and you will be able to access the eight level.

Good game and a rather amusing twist, though I was somewhat disappointed that
the only difference between everts 6-8 were faster/more monsters. There were a
few areas in levels 7 and 8 (the brick chamber namely) where you could get
permanently stuck without a way to restart as well. I'd love to see another one

Shay Guy   |98.196.23.xxx |2009-01-08 04:54:25
Level seven actually has one eversion point for every state. Yes, that means you
can go all the way back to state 1 (and I think you have to to get all the
gems.) The 6-7 eversion point is pretty early on, under a long platform. (My
biggest problem with this level, after finding all the eversion points, was
remembering which is which.)
Anonymous   |96.225.210.xxx |2009-01-01 12:30:21
Holy...

Amazing. Absolutely amazing. I specifically turned the lights off to
play this game by about level 6, when it started taunting my after I died.

My
only real complaint... It tended to have errors that forced it to close. A lot.
Also, occassionally I would hit "x" and it would close the program. Made
the game take about twice as long because I had to keep redoing levels. D:
Kon  - Quite easy   |80.217.202.xxx |2009-01-01 15:14:25
Ya, I think it was quite easy and not very fun, felt like normal platformer kind
of. I didn't get all the gems first run, but around 220. And why do people keep
saying it's scary/creepy? The only moment I thought it was creepy was the first
time I saw the hands, first time, then it was nothing...

Sure, quite original
game, nice graphics and sound, but the eversion thing wasn't in it really much,
and without it it's kind of like a normal platformer.

Sorry for sounding so,
umm, rant-ish, but it could've been a bit better. If you make a second or
something, more effect from the eversion, maybe?
Eversion 2?

Hannah   |82.25.140.xxx |2009-01-01 15:24:01
For all stuck on level 2-1..

World 2:
-Jump on the platforms killing
monsters and collecting the visible gems. The boxes on the fourth platform are
impossible to get at the moment.
-Continue jumping along the path until you
reach a tall stack of purple platforms. Go to the very top platform to reach the
eversion spot. Hit the eversion button.
-Don't turn around, keep going along
the path (you can now jump on the clouds) collecting gems and killing monsters
until you find the second eversion spot on the last purple platform before land.
Enter that one. Now you can backtrack and hit all the face boxes you missed and
collect all the gems you couldn't get.
-To safely backtrack past the tall stack
of purple platforms, jump on an enemy to get on the clouds.

Good game....very good both finals, the first time i saw the first final, it was
wow...The second final caught me with surprise too.
And the hand almost made me
jump off the chair the first time i saw.

Bugs:
I found some bugs, like in
some areas you can get traped and you need to press esc, because you can't get
out and you can't get die, one of them is in the level 8 where you need to climb
a hole in the blocks and them you need to fall the blocks(the part where there's
a lot of blocks), another part is in a level ehre there's a lot of blocks too
and you need to fall them , i cant' remember and if you break them all(i did)
you get stuck. If you wanted that, please at least put something there to make
suicide, because pass the first part of level 8 again it was really
stressing.

Anothe r one is that if i keep hitting the block(standing below
the block and jumping on it) and if the level occurs an eversion the block
...
Fernando   |189.132.193.xxx |2009-01-02 01:38:24
the get trapped...

I dont believe that is actually a bug, I mean, someone with
half a brain may deduct that if you dont do something in the proper order you
will probably get stuck (tried to get the last 2 gems of level 7?)

A suicide
button is useless, you have the escape key.

The game/levels aren't that long,
just get more skills and do it again, FASTER.
Anonymous  - re:   |189.54.153.xxx |2009-01-02 02:26:40
Yeah i probably shoudn't have wrote in the bug area, because it apearead as the
guy who made it wanted that.....But i got rly pissed to pass the beggining of
level 8 again.
But the problem with escape key is that you need to do the level
all again , and if you die you can begin after the start of level 8.
jake   |69.205.97.xxx |2009-01-02 01:23:12
So are there only two endings, the "normal one" that's probably the same
whether you get all 240 gems or not, and the "good" ending past level 8
with 240 gems?
Simon   |83.91.55.xxx |2009-01-02 01:31:59
Yep, that's correct.
Fernando   |189.132.193.xxx |2009-01-02 01:35:33
you get only 2 endings, level 7 and level 8, regardless of how many gems you
get.

Of course, collecting all 240 would mean you found all the possible
eversion spots in the game, so its more like an accomplishment than a
requirement :)

Nice game btw.

Yeah, level 7 was totally ridiculous. There's like 10 eversion

racing the whole time along with that little flower sprite...

though i have to
say lvl 4 was the one to make me jump with that be-damned hand popping out from
the water (i probably spent a good half hour just timing all the jumps right so
i didn't jump onto the hands)...

the endings... wow, the bad one... i'm glad
they blacked it out... good one just left me saying 'what the f***!'

Did anybody else notice level 1 shares similarities to level 1 of Super Mario

YF3   |68.42.227.xxx |2009-01-02 02:06:52
I think that was done because it starts up a little how Super Mario Bros. does,
and the only way to defeat enemies is to, of course, jump on their heads.

If you find yourself complaining it's too hard, that the game needs save points,
or that the 'traps' that require 'esc' are unfair, you shouldn't be whining.
Give up already, like the game says.

Games don't need GODMODEOVERKILL codes to

What a unique game. Rather dark, too- every time I thought the environment

Nice touch on the (real) final level, too. The

Although, overall, it was a breeze...for me, anyways...there were some parts in
the game where I am very grateful for the infinite lives you've
provided...namely during the (although somewhat excessive) backtracking in World
7. I probably died there about 8 times more than I did on the last world, even.
The music was also enjoyable, but I could barely make out the
"heartbeat" music of Song7 without turning the volume up. The only real
complaints that I have...is that it was a short game, and there was only a few
obstacles/monsters to deal with. The variations between 'everts' 1 through 5
were pretty cool, but (as BlkKnight said) there wasn't much difference between 6
through 8. Overall, however, this was one of the better/more memorable games
that I have ever found on the net. It almost felt like a cross between (classic)

I wish I found the game creepy. But shitty-ass old school graphics and
ear-shattering chip tunes don't do it for me.

Also requiring pixel precision
made me close the game at world 4 to let it finish its journey to my trashcan.
The eighties called, they want their crappy amateurish game design back.

Yeah,
I know it's free, but I don't see the point of emulating long forgotten
crappy-ass games down to the awful music and the pixelized graphics. I
certainly don't regret this kind of game.

Did you even look at the screencap? What the fuck where you

Besides,

In this day and age there are way more interesting ways to
quickly make stylized graphics than pixel art, which is
basically emulating annoying technical constraints of
the olden days for no good reason whatsoever, except for
nostalgia (which is only our brain selectively remembering only
the high points of past things).

Ok, I haven't played the game yet, but I just want to know one thing: is it a
screamer? I keep reading things like "creepy", "freaky", and
scary and shit, and at the top it has the warning message. I just want to know
if at some point at the end if something pops up on the screen and screams at
like max volume or some other BS.

No, there's nothing like that. It's creepy in a much more mature way. Black

This was quite a game. I did not play through it myself past level 4 because I'm

a cute little game with some mildly sad music when you everted to other
parallels...

then level 3 came and the black ooze started chasing me, giving
me a bit of a panic rush, 4's bloody hands from hell were the first thing to
make me jump

5 kind of got me grossed out with the goomba-like creatures(and
you) bursting into fountains of blood when hit. 6 was just a total panic with
the bloody wall of doom chasing you across crumbling bricks while dodging the
snakes it spat... and the heartbeat music definitely added a chill to it...

7
was ok save for all the backtracking, and the evert music for the level was
definitely eerie... 8's evert changes left me standing for VERY long periods of

I know half the fun is figuring things out yourself, but I can't for the life of
me figure out how to get those last few gems on level 5.

Would you mind
explaining how you backtrack across that body of water after you've eversed at
the end and in between the thorns?
Myouki   |85.37.191.xxx |2009-01-09 22:36:00
well, at the beginning, there's actually 2 evert points before the crumbling
blocks... first choose the top evert point (5-6) and break a crumbling block
WITHOUT falling through (it may take a few tries), now go back to the blocks at
the very beginning and use the bottom level evert point (5-4)and collect all the
gems there before going back to the hole you made earlier at the blocks and fall
through... collect all the gems one this side of the lake, then suicide once you
have them all (good thing the game doesn't keep track of how many time you
die)

now that you're back at the beginning, use the top evert point to move
across the blocks above the water (be careful since the blocks break from under
you) until you get to the other side of the water...just keep going like this
until you get to the evert point inside the square block formation (5-5) (make
sure to make an opening that you can get out of for the breaking blocks)

in...
Dan Park   |61.83.152.xxx |2009-01-12 13:51:08
You don't need to suicide. There's an evert point (5-5) on top of the first
'building' you see after the first place from where you can't go back without
dieing. Since you can't break the blocks from above in x-5 you need to jump over
using an enemy right next to the wall. After that use the evert point inside the
square block formation (5-6) to break the blocks covering the evert point to
x-4. I don't know if I explained it well enough because it would be better if I
used some images too.
Myouki  - (Cont.)   |85.37.191.xxx |2009-01-09 22:36:28
inside the thorn area, there's another evert point you can use to get the gems

Wervyn  - Kudos on a fun diversion     |24.98.183.xxx |2009-01-07 08:50:43
Played this several days ago off the VGCats link; good to see some neat stuff
from a former Zeuxer. The game has its flaws but is still quite well done for a
short diversion, and has some excellent little puzzles (world 7 in particular).
I'm in the camp that really can't consider this game scary -- come on, it's Cute
Lovecraft -- but it has a delightfully creepy atmosphere and some wonderful
gotcha moments (like the beginning of level 4, or the first hand soon
thereafter).

It's also tough, but not really hard, by which I mean that most of
the difficulty is artificial (somewhat a negative) and can be overcome with a
little practice and muscle training, and enough patience to try a rough spot
several times in a row until you get it. Fortunately the addition of a
checkpoint mid-level, and the fact that the levels are relatively short, makes
this more forgiving than it might be.

Some complaints: the game could really use some nuance in the movement controls.
That's where a lot of the artificial difficulty comes from, and what I mean by
that is you can't easily make your avatar do what you want it to in a lot of
situations. Left/right movement goes from zero to fast in an instant, making it
hard to inch up to a hole. The jumping is also all or nothing; you can't
control the height of your jump. (Fortunately zaratustra didn't commit the
grievous gameplay sin of putting in spiked ceilings that you can't avoid jumping
into.)

The biggest area where the movement needs improvement is in getting
through one space wide holes. The fact that you can run over them is an
excellent feature. The fact that you have to be lined up perfectly to fall or
jump through them is an exercise in frustration. Probably 90% of my deaths in
the game were a result of trying to quickly get through a hole and missing it by
Wervyn  - Kudos, concluded     |24.98.183.xxx |2009-01-07 08:55:40
Despite being a little rough around the edges though, the game was still a

Love it! Great idea, with just enough mean elements to remember the old days of
video games, and some great puzzles. Those jumps on level 4 were killer. The
bad end was just classic. But then to be double whammied with the Good end was
gold. Bravo. I'll be keeping Eversion in my fav games folder from now on.

personally i think the difficulty level sort of peaked at level 6. 7 was a
little tricky but once you got the gist of it it was easy enough. 8 was less of
a puzzle and more of a series of 'look before you leap' type obstacles.

i
think something crazy at the end of 8 would have gone down better like 5 flying
hands coming from different directions. nonetheless it was fun, i passed up
guitar hero for this a couple of times so that was good.

i think had this
been released as a longer version 15 years ago it would have rivaled mario

Wow, that was just plain eerie. I jumped out of my seat quite a few times once

Overall, it was a good difficulty, though I did hate tat the gems

I'd give it an 8/10, just for the

My record is 2/240 gems, coming from level 4, where the hand's

Interesting game. Levels were pretty easy until 6 and 7. I found myself
cursing more than a few times because of them.

Toughest level: 6, don't know
how many times I died due to getting hit by Satan's sperm (whatever those flying
monstrosities are). Whereas 7 was just a major annoyance due to the constant
everting you needed to do (going back and forth on the map didn't help much
either).

Anyways ending was funny, took me about 45 mins to an hour to finish.

It's an interesting game, and I had fun. It show signs of a good start for your
developing. I do have a complaint though.

Like a lot of indie games I
didn't feel like I was playing against the world or it's monsters, I felt like I
was playing against the programmer. There wasn't really any internal logic as
to where everse locations were other than a contrived key and lock system, or
"where would the programmer put it to make it as hard as
possible?"

Ha ving difficulty is fine, but it needs to draw you in. If a
movie director has done a great job then while you're in the theater you forget
that you're watching a movie. I was at all times very aware that I was playing
a game.

Don't get me wrong, most designers don't get far enough that they
should even bother thinking about stuff like this. So you're doing well. The
fact that this is a recognizable issue means that the other problems are far
behind ...

Nice work. There were a few problems - most notably, levels 6, 7, and 8 are
fairly boring for one level, let alone three, and could have used more unnerving
effects rather than over-the-top "scary" ones - but, overall, the game
was worth playing.

Also, the level 3 music kicks ass.
The ZX - Rock On-   |75.81.193.xxx |2009-01-12 02:17:18
I did a little script hacking of this game. (Since the pack includes the script
files, I just couldn't help it after I perfected the game) I found a lot of
small little tidbits in the game. Like a 7 to 8 portal in world 3, an invisible
block in world 6, and "eversions" 0 and -1! As well as the fact that the
hands are still in the "happy" eversions, but they just stay offscreen
until 5-8.
Gadge   |220.235.35.xxx |2009-01-12 12:44:47
What the hell do 0 and -1 look like?

Probably just a test eversion or
something.
The ZX   |75.81.193.xxx |2009-01-12 14:34:53
Everson 0 replaces the ground with little chalkboard running... balls with no
face. The enemies get replaced with the word "goal" and a question mark
under them. Blocks look like weird claws and clouds look like vortexes with a !
inside. Eversion -1 has everything normal, but in outlines. The blocks have bold
outlines inside them. Both have no music obviously. :P
Anonymous   |65.191.181.xxx |2009-01-12 15:38:24

The ZX   |75.81.193.xxx |2009-01-14 06:21:16
Well, you can't get them upfront. You have to abuse a CERTAIN line of hacked
code to get there. and it sometimes freezes on either.
__fastcall   |205.208.245.xxx |2009-04-27 01:44:23
I've noticed it only freezes when goombas are active. If you remove the goomba
spawning code, then you can safely evert to eversion 0, -1, and beyond.

never finished it but... I've definitely been more freaked out by other stuff...
like half life a couples times... when the head crabs jump out they always get
me.

Also the Flood's intro in Halo 1 was amazingly scarey... made me very
nervous.

If you never finished it then how do you know how scary it
is? Watching it on Youtube is not quite as bad as being
the one in control I'd say from experience.

Chare   |198.166.60.xxx |2009-01-13 03:59:28
So much better than studying. Though controls are a little finicky. I gave up
at the angry hands, though. I've watched my roommate play up to the level with
the crazy splats of blood, so I know how to get past the crazy hands, but I
can't seem to time my jumps well enough or get my fingers around the controls
well enough to be able to do it.

But this seems so cool. :3
Bloodstar   |172.131.2.xxx |2009-01-13 06:04:45
I was quite impressed with this game, overall. I loved the SMS style feel it
had, you usually see those aiming for "8-bit" trying to mimic the NES!
(Even the music, to an extent, felt like the SMS.)

I wasn't creeped out at all
by the game's progression, but rather curious as to what everyone thought was so
bad. I have to admit, I did get a bit of a shock when a hand would spawn
unexpectedly, but it never really creeped me out. =P

I also loved the second
ending. Didn't see that one coming...
Anonymous   |124.183.115.xxx |2009-01-13 06:49:06
Do you get a good ending if you get all the gems?
Anonymous   |195.50.200.xxx |2009-01-13 09:56:11
Yes. First you have to collect all the gems, complete the level, see a bad
ending and then at the start of the world 7, you have to evert.
anonymous   |76.226.168.xxx |2009-01-14 21:39:42
i downloaded it but i cant play it help plz
mjk   |76.100.216.xxx |2009-01-15 16:38:50
Oy, there is no "good" ending, heh. None that I could find, anyway.
There is an 8th world if you collect all gems and evert right at the beginning
of level 7 though. The ending at level 8 is even creepier... This game is a
serious work of art. To make a short game with a simple look that starts off all
happy-friendly, and to make it creepier as you go like that... wow.

Now I just
wonder if there is a hidden level 9, heh. Had to read the forums to see how to
get to level 8. I feel stupid now.
Tomorrow Perfume   |66.60.188.xxx |2009-02-04 06:30:43
I think there is a 'good' ending - everything is what you make of it, including
love and beauty.
mjk   |76.100.216.xxx |2009-01-15 16:43:44
Also, all you gotta do at the labyrinth part is this: let the world shift so
that you can break a block above with your head or one below with your feet.
Instead of killing the monsters, just section them off by breaking the blocks.
The first part is trickier. The second half is easy. As long as you're on the
half that they can't get to, you're safe, so take your time.

Or is the
labyrinth the part with the heavy wall of blocks that you need to get through?
If that's the case, let the world evert to I believe the one in which time stops
for the enemies. Hit the blocks above you. The blocks below will not break until
the world shifts into one of the creepier versions of the current one.
mjk   |76.100.216.xxx |2009-01-15 16:45:52
Hope this game comes out with new levels... or like, an evert 2. I dunno.
Something.

Hell, make a wii game out of it. Retro is making a comeback. Megaman
9 is a brand-spankin' new game out for Wii, in the style of the old NES games.
8-bit and whatnot. Some flash games get enough respect to be turned into console
games, ya know? Let's see if this one has the potential...

The whole not for kids and nervous disposition had me convinced it would be one
of those games were if you did something wrong something would jump out and
scream at you. I'm really glad that isn't the case and all and all this was a
really interesting concept.

The game play was too frustrating for me to get
though though and resorted to watching youtube to see how it went. Would
recommend it to my friends who don't get as tired as I of the jumps and what
not.

We're... admittedly tearing the crud out of this game to see how it was made. XD

Great job with the game!

Good things; the concept, the music, and the old
school throwback. The changing mood of the game truly sets this apart from many
others.

Bad things; Repetition, collision detection. The 1px jumping and being
able to hover in mid-air due to the sprite box got to be annoying.

Null things;
Difficulty. Not good or bad, but still satisfying to beat.

I would reccomend
this to anyone with a quick hour or so to burn on the game. Amazing work,
Zaratustra!

I spent about an hour and a half getting 100% on this game and I have to
say...one, very nice job. It was time well spent: neither too short nor too long
for what it was. Second, this is proof that, sometimes, taking something we know

any of the "horror" games out there.

Step by step instructions for Mac

1) If you haven't already, install x11 and
x11 SDK from the install disk that came with your computer.

2) Go here
h**p://www.macports. org/install.php and choose you OS, then instal the .pkg
file normally.

3) Follow the instructions on the macports wiki and mac how-to
to download WINE, winetricks, and xorg-server. It should be something like
this:

sudo port install wine
sudo port install winetricks
sudo port install
xorg-server

It will ask for your password, and it will take a very, very long
time. Make sure you have an internet connection.

4) Using the new x11 that
came with xorg-server (it should be in your Applications folder), navigate to
the folder containing eversion and run the program through WINE. It is very
important that you navigate to the correct folder with the cd command. Use
these three commands:

export PATH=/opt/local/bin: /opt/local/sbin:$PAT H

cd
~/username/...

Um, "look behind you" wasn't the part intended to be creepy per se. In
combination with the decay of the cute Utopian world into some sort of
hellscape, disturbing music, and general sense of Lovecraftian darkness, it
became creepy.
Define "real horror" for us all, won't you?

1) You might need a C++ runtime library or two. (I'd already installed some of
these for other games.) The winetricks script will help install these for
you.

2) Make absolutely sure you run Eversion from its "home"
directory, or it won't be able to find the necessary files.

everything would be fine, but on random occasions the character would continue
walking left or right indefinitely even after I let go of the key until I hit

I am the most frustrated I have ever been in my life because of the placement of
enemies after a death in the middle of a level, the need to do each level over
and over until muscle memory is developed, and the fact that Windows keeps
shutting the game down randomly. I've had to do each level about fifty billion
times, and needless to say my patience should have worn out by now. However, I
keep playing because the concept is so perfectly executed that I have to find
out what the next level is like. So echoing what others have said, brilliant
game, needs a few tweaks.

I'm working on it... :)

Here's what it looks like so far:
h**p://img21.im
ageshack.us/img21/49 92/eversionmapeditor .png

The only problem I'm having is
that the Shiny engine is really finicky about how the map is; if there is a
slight abnormality, it will segfault.

There are a lot of limitations and hard
coded values that you won't be able to change -- for example, the levels'
starting eversion are hard coded, you can only have 8 maps (or it will crash)
and etc...
Stojke  - Wow   |82.208.202.xxx |2009-04-06 20:43:59

h**p: //img5.imageshack.us /img5/4610/editoro.j pg

For the
editor, all that's left to do is undo/redo and a few bug fixes. However, to get
around those limitations in the scripts, I can spend some time modifying the
scripts and the map data accordingly to add features like the starting eversion
for each level (currently hard coded in the scripts), the player position, save
points, the 99 gem display limitation, and etc. I can either distribute the
modified scripts as a modified version of Eversion, or hopefully I can talk the
author in committing the code changes and map changes to an updated version.

Why does this use 100% cpu?

And what kind of calculations is it doing that
cause massive lag at the peak of jumps?

And why does the game start to freeze

These are the questions I will never

The graphics API that Eversion/Shiny Engine uses is SDL.
Because SDL is a software-based rendering API, it relies on
the CPU rather than the GPU to
maintain compatibility between platforms.  (Although SDL
might hardware-accelerate some of the blitting operations if
it's supported by the GPU.) The best solution is to
keep the rendering window as small
as possible.

[quote=Ze vrand]
And why does the game start
to freeze my entire computer after level six or so?

You just might have a severe case of a crappy computer!
Zevrand   |134.173.202.xxx |2009-04-27 05:31:31
A platformer has no reason to grab all the CPU it can. Seriously, your
technology isn't any more advanced than, say, the later entries in the Commander
Keen series, so the only possible explanation for such excessive calculation is
you just might have a severe case of suboptimal code.

The only game I know that
can justify using that much crunch is Dwarf Fortress, and I can run *that* fine.
__fastcall  - Zing!   |205.208.245.xxx |2009-04-28 23:48:30
The platformer itself doesn't have reason to grab all the CPU, the graphics API
itself has reason to, though.

Also, Commander Keen ran on a 320x200 with 4 bits
of color, and also didn't have any other running processes.

For the thousands
of people who enjoy this game at full speed, your computer seems to be the
outlier in all the normal data.

I like the new world 8, when I found out where all the eversion points were. In
my opinion, time attack should be separated in two categories - a simple
runthrough and all gems runs.
Maybe for all gems time attack, world 8 would be
better if it would be modified so that there would be gems to collect and which
would force you to go through every single section if player wants to collect
all the gems. Maybe a third ending for that effort too.

AM40   |90.191.79.xxx |2009-05-13 23:38:36
There are multiple routes to take. I suggest taking the following path:
Don't
evert in the first section,
Evert to world 8-6 in next section.
In next section,
there's a set of spikes/flowers where you can evert to 8-5.
Next section, evert
to 8-4 (even though you can evert to 8-3 there).
Then there comes a row of
monsters suspended in blocks high above. Jump and evert below the block without
the enemy.
In next section, it's easy to evert to 8-1 and proceed to the final
section.
KillerSkaarj   |71.77.147.xxx |2009-05-15 03:17:50
What do you mean by "Jump and evert below the block without the enemy."?
I have no clue what you're talking about.
AM40   |90.191.79.xxx |2009-05-15 03:22:19
In one section where you enter when being in world 8-4, there are many single
blocks high above you with all but one having an enemy on it. The block without
the enemy shows you where eversion point is.
KillerSkaarj   |71.77.147.xxx |2009-05-15 03:26:45
Whoops, disregard that, I was playing one of the sections WRONG this whole time.

Holy christ. OK, I can deal with the new hand graphics, reluctantly, but the new
level 8 is just horrible. Not only is it annoying as hell, with an extremely
contrived level setup, there's no way to glitch past the bad parts. All you guys
had to do was shorten two of the "wait for it to evert" sections; why
did you do this? :'(

to start entirely from the beginning of the level which is very frustrating.
AM40   |90.191.79.xxx |2009-05-18 07:10:43
There are multiple paths.
I bet you tried the hardest one. Here's a hint: there
are numerous eversion points in every section and you don't have to evert every
time it's possible to get to the end. Hint: evert in the second section, not
first. And also, you may find an eversion point right above thorns.

This game has a showstopper-class bug (i.e., your only option is to quit the
game) at 5-6, i.e., in world 5 at the darkest evert level. Past the lake, there
is a ledge with a ton of crumbly bricks on top. However, if you hop on top of
the leftmost side of this set of bricks, you burn/break the bricks below you in
rapid succession - leaving you trapped in a deep hole that you can't escape.

It was a ton of fun playing this game. I managed to beat all of the levels
(including 8) and get the two endings, the first being creepy and the second
being sweet in some weird way.

I encountered one bug on level 8- in the big
maze/labyrinth area, there's a small everse spot with a cloud on the top row of
bricks. If you everse while standing "on" the cloud, it sends you to the
top if the screen, and when you run to the right to go to the next section it
repeatedly kills you until you restart the level.

The sound matched well, the
graphics sufficed, and the atmosphere was amazing. Great job!

At the end of the game, if you don't collect all the crystals, the princess
turns into The Dark Lady, everything turns dark and you are consumed by the
complete and utter darkness of the place. Oh and a massive eye appears which is
scary.

If you collect every single crystal in the game, then when the princess
turns into The Dark Lady, your character turns into the Prince of Darkness and
you make sweet love in the darkness. And the eye appears again but there's a
heart in it instead of a pupil.

I'm having some trouble running this on a Mac. I try to open it via Darwine (Mac

the application outside its home directory." Anyone happen to have any ideas
how to fix this?
Lord Seth   |146.151.199.xxx |2009-08-04 17:32:02
I got it to work by using CrossOver Mac (which is based on Wine). Though if

they know the answer!

This game totally hooked me. I love platformers from the old-school days, this
kept me hooked becuase it had catchy little tunes and it was just *weird*.
Level 6 had me ready to throw my computer out the window, the last little
"maze" trying to get up to the last 5 skull-gems, I had a hell of a time
trying to destroy the bricks and then jump to their platform. On level 8, I
spent way too much time trying to get past the last hand, only to not realize
there was an evert point before the last hand. Crap! I played through to get
all the gems and also go through 8 for the laternate ending. The only thing I
did not like was on 8, the section where you have to make sure you leave enough
bricks to jump later, but if you don't, there are sometimes no way to die -
starting the level over from scratch really sapped my will to continue, took me
a few days to motivate myself to do it right. I'd say perfect if it had
some...

Cesar   |189.19.78.xxx |2009-10-23 14:51:43
I actually had too some ideas for a game that slightly resemble this before
playing.

The change wouldn't be as slow;
The main characters wouldn't be
affected unless they decided to help the looming creepiness, but the world would
inevitably change if they slacked off;
It wouldn't be as gory too.

...and this
would be only the first world.

But my general intention is not scaring players.
The source of the creepiness would be an understandable entity.

This game could be taken for a metaphor for life, actually; When you first come
into the world, everything's so innocent and pure, and nothing ever goes wrong.
However, as life goes on, more and more of the awful truths begin to unfold as
you look into the right places. It's all so sudden, you wonder what happened.
The Earth that was once so Utopian and wonderful suddenly became a twisted,
miserable wasteland. Zee Tee's a young child, trapped in the middle of all of
the horrors, just trying to survive.

Just beat level 8 (finally!) And I have to say I am very, VERY impressed. I've
been searching for a game that scares you psychologically rather than using
gratuitous amounts of blood and gore.
However, I feel like the warning at the
beginning was kinda unfulfilled, and it just made me feel like something really
terrifying was going to happen, which it didn't. However, in the later levels,
i did have a sense of dread while playing, which I enjoyed.
The game was also
quite short, but i feel that finding all the gems in level 7 and completing
level 8 almost make up for that.
That little surprise at the end of level 8
surprised the hell outta me, btw. :)

I love this game. The true ending made me smile. Bought the steam version,
must find third ending!
TheL   |67.85.66.xxx |2010-10-05 01:10:39
Third ending you finish Level 7 in eversion 4. I find it rather amusing.

Okay, wow. Was not expecting the game to turn
out like...that.

The messed-up level start messages were a
great touch. I hope to see more games like this, or new levels at
least.

Hello, I am trying to run this program on a Macintosh through the program
Crossover. Any possible reason as to why it gives me the message "Failed to
open File for Writing"?
Tank   |98.247.152.xxx |2010-10-15 11:49:45
It wont evert at the second level, where you jump on the clouds to pass over the
water...nothing happens when i press the evert button, What now?

I am so jealous of you being able to come up with this game.

Absolutely loved it. Went through it in one go at midnight, didn't finish for
two hours. I really have to say that it's perfect length, short enough that you
can get through it, but long enough that it's still satisfying (not to mention
effective at being draining). I'll definitely pick up Eversion HD and keep my
eye on your future projects, even if they aren't brilliant in the same way as
this.

ArodIX   |27.32.161.xxx |2011-01-05 09:34:37
Terrific game. Interesting concept, and the way the game got darker and creepier
as you progressed was done exceptionally well. I enjoyed almost every minute of
it.

Up until the long collapsing brick bit in level 8 where you have to
backtrack. That bit is tedious and fiddly and I wasn't having fun anymore, so I
stopped playing there.
tjames  - how do you get the very last two gems?   |67.170.117.xxx |2011-01-07 03:42:34
i got everythign but 2 gems... theres an area where you need a monster to jump
on in order to gain access to however i cannot get out of this area once inside
in order to get the last two gems and if i reset they go back into the box which
have to be hit to get the gems out.
Nightgazer   |65.105.167.xxx |2011-01-11 18:59:35
That fiddly part with the collapsing bricks can actually be avoided, if my
memory serves and if nothing's changed since I last played. Look fo an eversion
point right before that in an area that looks like it will get you killed if you
jump on it. Everse right before dying. Makes things much easier.

Great game. I have to say, I'm very impressed. The only part that made me jump
was the first hand.
Swerve   |69.120.240.xxx |2011-03-05 16:21:09
When will this come out on a mac? Because i know you can download this using
wine or something but im really confused so could you just make a version for
the mac? This would satisfy and make a lot of people's lives easier to get this
game!
